FIRST MEMORIAL PROGRAM TREES PLANTED ON OCT. 21, 2023
On Oct. 21, 2023, volunteers planted 14 trees in Brookside Cemetery, the inaugural planting in Re-Tree Tecumseh’s new memorial tree program, which plants trees in the historic cemetery in memory of loved ones.
“We launched the program this spring in partnership with Brookside and have received an encouraging response from the public,” said Cheri Hinkleman, RTT president. “It will help replenish the tree canopy in the historic section, where many old trees have been taken down over the last few years, as well as add them in other areas. We hope to be able to plant trees twice a year, in spring and fall."
The next batch of memorial trees will be planted in spring 2024 (limited to 15; see application here). Deadline for application is March 15, 2024. Participants in the program can choose the species of tree and its approximate location in the cemetery; also included is a black granite plaque engraved with a dedication of the purchaser’s choice.
Jim Karle of Karle Landscaping (Tipton, MI) dug the holes for the trees at a reduced cost; the trees were provided by Rich Hoadley of R & W Tree Nursery (Morenci, MI) at a reduced cost. The City of Tecumseh provided mulch and watering.
Re-Tree Tecumseh is a grassroots organization, founded in 2018, whose mission is to establish and fund an ongoing tree-planting program on public property in the City of Tecumseh. Its programs are supported entirely by donations, grants, and fundraisers. This event will bring its total number of trees planted around Tecumseh to 239.
